Alzheimer’s disease can create very challenging times for family, caregivers, and friends of loved ones living with the illness. It’s just as important to focus on the caregiver’s well being as it is the person living with the disease.  Caregivers, either at home or in a nursing home, are vulnerable to all kinds of negative emotional issues brought about by the hardships of Alzheimer’s care.  It’s important that caregivers remain aware of these issues, prepare for them, and address them as necessary.

Stress

Caregivers often report very high levels of stress.  It’s not always an easy thing to pinpoint right away. Here are some signs of caregiver stress:

  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Exhaustion
  • Irritability
  • Health Problems
  • Lack of Concentration
  • Social Withdrawal
  • Sleeplessness
  • Denial

If you are experiencing some of these signs, you should consult your healthcare provider before the problems get worse.  Stress can be quite detrimental to your health.

How Can I Be a Healthy Caregiver?

You must take care of yourself or you will be no use to the person living with Alzheimer’s.  Here are some helpful tips:

  • Educate yourself. The more informed you are, the better equipped you are to handle your loved one, doctors, nurses and other caregivers. You can find information on websites like alz.org, or contact your local Alzheimer’s Association. You can also reach out to an Alzheimer’s care residential facility for assistance.
  • Be aware of your resources. There are many services that can assist you taking care of your loved one. Meals-on-wheels, adult day-care, private nurses, and also residential memory care facilities are just a few.
  • Get help. It’s important to know that asking for help does not mean you’re failing as a caregiver. It’s quite the contrary. Find support from friends, family, and community resources. You can attend Alzheimer’s Association support group meetings or join the online community.  Studies have shown that counseling and support groups can have a significant positive impact on caregivers.
  • Don’t allow guilt to enter the equation. Guilt is a common demon among caregivers, and it can be quite destructive. Be aware of this and know that you’re doing the best you can.  Try to avoid feeling like you “could do more.” Be proud of what you have done.
  • Know that changes will come and accept them as they do. By the nature of the disease, Alzheimer’s progresses and gets worse. The needs of loved ones will change. Plan ahead if possible and identify services such as residential care. Know which facilities you like and what they will cost.
  • Don’t sacrifice your own health. Maintain proper diet, exercise, sleep etc. Make time for your own enjoyable activities. Engage in social activities as much as you can.  Again, take advantage of services that will take some of the load off of you and enable you to maintain a healthy routine.
  • Stay positive and realistic. Keep in mind that many occurrences that result from Alzheimer’s are beyond your control.  Try to focus on the good moments.
  • Plan ahead for financial and legal issues. Talk to a lawyer about issues involving legal and financial concerns. Include the person with Alzheimer’s if appropriate.  Residential facilities specializing in Alzheimer’s care are very valuable and important for the well-being of your loved one, but you should plan for the financial part of that equation.
