Getting a tattoo is a very important decision that you will live with for the rest of your life. For many people, getting a tattoo when they turn 18 is a milestone moment that defines becoming an adult. Since getting a tattoo is such a momentous decision, here are a few things you should consider before taking the plunge:
Where on Your Body do you Want the Tattoo?
Choosing the location for your tattoo is a very important decision. If you work in a profession that requires professional decorum, it may be a good idea to choose a more concealed location for the tattoo where it can easily be hidden by clothing.
Another factor to consider is that different areas of the body are more sensitive to the tattoo needle. Generally, areas that have more fat and tissues, like arms and the lower back, will make getting a tattoo a more comfortable experience. Areas like the wrist and feet that don’t have much cushioning will cause more of a stringing sensation.
What Do you Want the Tattoo to Be?
Many people choose a tattoo based on something that has a deep meaning in their life. It could be a quote, a religious reference, a picture of something meaningful or a person’s name. When choosing what your tattoo will be, make sure you take into account that a tattoo is permanent.
While you might be madly in love and think you would never break up with your significant other, people get laser tattoo removal to take away names of past loves every day. You don’t want to end up at a tattoo supplies shop buying a removal kit, do you? This is a decision you shouldn’t take lightly.
Think About the Tattoo Before You Get It
Once you choose a tattoo idea you like, think about it for at least a week. Look at the design every day to decide if you still like it. If you have any doubts or reservations at all, start looking for a different tattoo design. You don’t want to go through with getting the tattoo and then decide after a short period that you hate it.
One idea to decide if the tattoo is right for you is to have a temporary tattoo in the exact same design placed on your skin. That way you can actually know what it will be like to have the tattoo before you commit to it for a lifetime.
